This less-morbid version of the classic “hangman” game will help reinforce Bible words in a fun and interactive way. This game can be adapted to any Bible lesson.
Materials:
(Depending on the display area you are using)
- Pen and paper, or
- Chalk and chalkboard, or
- Whiteboard marker and whiteboard, or
- Stick and sand
Preparation:
- Collect writing materials, depending on method of display)
- Choose and practice drawing a simple picture so that you can add lines if children guess incorrect letters. Any simple picture can be used (person, star, crown, 3D box, etc.) It is not required but matching a picture to the story adds a more intentional element. This is why a crown was chosen for the Queen Esther example. Practice drawing before the session if needed.
- Pre-select words that will be used. Pick a word from the Bible lesson (example: Esther, queen, king, Haman). Do not reveal words to the children until each word has been guessed or the guesses run out.

How to Play:
- Draw Blanks: Draw one line for each letter on the board or your chosen writing surface.
Example for the 6 letter word, “Esther” draw 6 blanks: _ _ _ _ _ _ - Explain to the Children: “We are going to guess a Bible word. You can guess one letter at a time. If the letter is in the word, I will write it in the correct place. If it is not, I will draw part of a picture. Try to guess the word before the picture is finished!”
- Take Turns Guessing: Students take turns guessing one letter at a time.
- Correct letters → write them in place.
- Incorrect letters → draw one part of the picture.
- Finish the Game
- If a child wishes to guess the word and gets it wrong, then that child sits out the next turn.
- If a student guesses the word → celebrate.
- If the drawing is finished first → reveal the word.
Adaptations:
Use words from the lesson (people, places, key ideas). After each word, ask a quick question. Keep rounds short so many children can participate.
