In this active game, teams of children race to assemble a verse correctly. Play it “big and loud” for large or outside spaces, or play a quieter version across a room.
Materials:
- A Bible and a chosen verse.
- Chalkboard and chalk, or
- Whiteboard and whiteboard markers, or
- Large piece of paper with a pencil or marker
Preparation:
- Read the memory verse together from the Bible. Explain and talk about what the verse means. Define any words that are unfamiliar. Talk about how the verse applies to the children’s lives. Guide everyone in saying the verse together a number of times to practice for the game.
- Provide the markers or chalk and mark out a starting line.
- Divide the group into two teams.
Instructions:
- When you say “go,” the first person on each team walks up to the board (or large paper) and writes the first word of a memory verse. The child then puts the chalk down and goes back and tags the next person on their team.
- The tagged person then walks up to the board and writes the second word of the memory verse before going back and tagging the third person.
- The first team to write the whole memory verse wins.
Adaptations:
- Card Relay: Instead of writing the words on the board, the words can be written on index cards (or any paper) and taped or tacked to the board.
- Puzzle Relay: Write the verse on a large piece of paper and then cut the paper into puzzle pieces. The children will put the puzzle back together during the game.
- Open Bible Relay: Each team can have a Bible to check themselves as they go.
- Memory Only Relay: The team must memorise the Scripture before the game begins.
- Three Dimensional Relay: Instead of writing the words of the verse on paper try writing them on other objects. The larger the space you are in the larger the objects can be.
- Write the words on large cardboard boxes so the children will have to stack them in order.
- Write the words on balloons and then tie them on a line of string in order.
- Unique Construction: Instead of sticking papers on a board use clothes pegs to peg them on a rope.
