- This simple idea can be adapted to any memory verse, age group or teaching situation.
- In the video instructions I used the verse James 2:17 from the story God Calls Abram.
Supplies:
- Paper
- Pen
- Post-its
Instructions for Reciting While Removing Post-its:
- Copy the verse on post-its with each word of the verse on a separate post-it (or have the children do this).
- Arrange the words on a flat surface (like a wall) so that they are in the same order as the verse is recorded in the Bible. Note: It is easier to learn the verse if phrases are kept together on the same line.
- Talk about the meaning of the verse. Define any words that the children may find difficult to understand.
- Have the children repeat the verse along with you (including the Scripture reference) a number of times until they are familiar with it.
- Remove one of the post-its so that a word is missing and the children should say the verse again together. They will say the missing word as if it were still there.
- The children continue to say the verse over and over as you are continue removing more and more words.
- Be sure to be “amazed” with their success and encourage them every step of the way. Actually, I think you WILL be amazed. The children will soon be able to say the verse even though there are no words left in front of them.
Instructions for Reciting the Verse While Adding Post-its:
- Copy the verse from the Bible neatly on a paper (or type it or have one of the children write it). Note: It is easier to learn the verse if phrases are kept together on the same line.
- Talk about the meaning of the verse. Define any words that the children may find difficult to understand.
- Have the children repeat the verse along with you (including the Scripture reference) a number of times until they are familiar with it.
- Cover one of the words in the verse so that it is not visible and then have the children say the verse (saying that missing word as if it were still visible).
- Continue to say the verse over and over while covering more and more words.
- The children will soon be able to say the verse even though there are no words visible to them.
Adaptations:
- Use a chalkboard or whiteboard and do this exercise. Write the verse on the chalkboard or whiteboard and erase one word at a time as the children repeat it.
- Use any other erasable pens and any erasable surface (window pane, refrigerator, etc.)
- Write the words of the verse on pieces of paper and remove the papers one at a time.
- Write the words of the verse on thick paper and turn over one paper at a time.
