Lyrics:
I may never march in the infantry
Ride in the cavalry
Shoot the artillery
I may never fly o’er the enemy
But I’m in the Lord’s army!
Yes Sir!
I’m in the Lord’s army!
Yes sir!
I’m in the Lord’s army!
Yes sir!
I may never march in the infantry
Ride in the cavalry
Shoot the artillery
I may never fly o’er the enemy
But I’m in the Lord’s army!
Yes sir!

I remember this song over 45 years ago and they are not the words we sang back then….
I sang this song rather troubling in church as a child. Just saying – if this song was affiliated with any other religion in the US it would be reported for promoting religious extremism and violence. Sheesh.
Hi J
I hear what you are saying but I’ve always thought about God as my commander when I’ve sung this song. The words are actually saying “I may never” be in a physical army but I say “yes sir” to the Lord.
I love how Ephesians 6:10-18 lays out the idea of spiritual warfare. Our true battle is not about what we see on an earthly battlefield.
God bless,
Mary
When was this song first published?
Hi Megan
I don’t have an answer for your question. The song did not originate with me. If you find out, I’d love to know as well.
Blessings,
Mary
Really most of these songs are composed by dedicated Christian teachers, I am well over 40 years and I cam remember I was taught this song in my Sunday school days! But it will really be good to know the composers.
